Chapter 19

Seira

After pulling arrogance around her shoulders like a mantle, Seira had stood near enough to Toryn to oversee his treatment while Matron Brisdarra and several of her women went about securing the centaur to the tree.

Then after he was hobbled and tried by many stout ropes, Seira and the matron had set out on patrol leading a good two-thirds of the other women.

Once they were all in place, the camp would be almost as safe as one of the fortress cities. Which was the only reason Seira was willingly leaving Toryn while he was tied up and helpless.

If there had been any possibility of a soul-mage getting to him, she never would have left his side. As it was, she didn’t like it, but she had a part to play—the dutiful Huntress protecting her people and the valuable centaur she’d managed to trick into aiding her.

It all left a bad taste in her mouth.

Though there was another reason she didn’t like leaving Toryn behind. She’d noticed the women remaining behind were already having a few celebratory drinks as was custom after a successful Hunt.

No doubt the drink would be flowing freely before long, and having a handsome centaur helpless would likely be a little too much for some of the women to resist.

But while Toryn might be accosted by a few drunk and amorous women, he was in centaur form, so there wasn’t much fun they could get up to. Toryn would survive a few unskilled kisses and caresses, she reminded herself.

That knowledge did little to help her unclench her jaw, though.

But the drunker and the more clouded the women’s minds, the heavier they would sleep, making her escape with Toryn that much easier. By the time the women awoke in the morning, she and the centaur would be far away.

She sent a mental prayer to her goddess.

Her plan had to work because she wouldn’t leave her partner to his fate. She’d given him her word that she wouldn’t capture him and turn him over to the matrons.

She was just beginning to mull over a second plan of escape if the first failed when her gaze landed on a familiar plant. She’d only noticed it because a stray moonbeam had penetrated the forest canopy overhead. Her breath caught.

Bronze-royal was named after its similar coloring to its coin namesake. It was a rare and valuable plant. Its many medicinal properties included speed with healing, pain reduction, and it could even put a patient to sleep when its seeds were steeped.

She just as swiftly looked away from the plant, not wanting to draw Brisdarra’s attention to it.

“I’ll hunt us a deer for dinner tonight, and then I’ll take first watch,” Seira told the other woman. “I’d feel better if you went back and secured my prize. I don’t want him escaping now that he knows what I have planned for him, thanks to your interference.”

The other woman snorted. “He would have figured it out swiftly enough on his own once you trapped him in the form of a man and had your way with him.
